The new education minister for Wales has said that improving primary and secondary teacher standards will be one of his top priorities in the coming years.

Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning Leighton Andrews AM said the wide range of initiatives introduced prior to his appointment means that his focus will be on ensuring they are streamlined and implemented as effectively as possible.

Mr Andrews told Wales Online: "Are there challenges on attainment? Yes, there are. Can we do more […] in the area of performance? I think we can.

"I'm someone who's more concerned about standards than I am about structures, on the whole."

He added that he expected to be making a series of announcements regarding specific plans to raise education standards in a couple of months.

Mr Andrews replaced former education minister Jane Hutt AM, who is now the Cabinet Minister for Business and Budget, in a cabinet reshuffle in December 2009.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19571596-ADNFCR
