Primary school children 'increasingly techno-savvy'

Primary teachers may want to make sure they are abreast of the latest technological developments following research which shows young children are increasingly techno-savvy.

A survey of 1,398 parents of children under 10 by prezzybox.com has revealed that 63 per cent of youngsters have their own mobile phone, while 77 per cent have their own personal computer or laptop at home.

Zak Edwards, managing director of the online gadget site, said: "While I think laptops and computers are important for education, internet access should either be restricted or at the very least, monitored."

He added that the study showed many parents are failing to adequately monitor their children's phone and internet usage.

Other electrical items popular with primary children were handheld consoles, owned by the children of 52 per cent of those questioned and MP3 players, which were in the possession of 46 per cent.

A representative of government agency Becta recently claimed that having a computer and internet access in the home can significantly boost a child's chances of academic success.
