The Welsh Assembly Government is to commission a full-scale review of education funding in the country, it has been confirmed.

According to Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning Leighton Andrews AM, external consultants will commence work on a two-stage review from February 2010, designed to 'refocus' education finance in the country.

Mr Andrews said: "I want to see more funding going to schools, colleges and universities.

"It is imperative that we reduce the bureaucracy and streamline the education system to make it lean and effective to benefit our learners."

He added that the first stage of the review will consist of an internal assessment examining the current cost of administering education in Wales.

In his New Year's address, new Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones AM said the key to a successful economic recovery in Wales lies in the education and skills development of its people.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19569032-ADNFCR
