An education union has praised the efforts of pupils and teachers for their achievements with this year's GCSE and A-level results which were released in league tables this week.

The general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers Dr Mary Bousted said that the effort made by pupils and teachers to improve achievement levels was clear.

"The rise in achievement among students in London over the past ten years is particularly noticeable and is largely due to the impact of the London Challenge," she said.

Following the success of the London Challenge, the government introduced the National Challenge, designed to help underperforming schools reach new standards.

She added that as the job market has changed shaped, it is important for individuals to leave school with the knowledge and ability to continue learning.

Teachers in London and across the country - through the London and National Challenge programmes - are now helping more children to achieve these goals.
