Teenage girls were due to be given the HPV1 Cervarix jab when news broke of the 14-year-old's death, sparking fears about its safety.

Responding to the news, the Department of Health withdrew the batch of the vaccine as a "precautionary" measure.

Investigations are still underway into what made the schoolgirl Natalie Morton collapse.

Meanwhile, the vaccine's manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline announced it was voluntarily recalling the batch - AHPVA043BB - for testing.

A Department of Health spokesman said: "Following tragic news of the death of a girl in Coventry on Monday, the Department of Health is working closely with the NHS, regulatory bodies, to thoroughly investigate the details of the case."

According to the NHS, the HPV vaccine protects against the two strains of the human papillomavirus HPV that causes cervical cancer in over 70 per cent of cases.
