Midlands charity 'warns of obesity underfunding'

Teachers in London and around the UK may be concerned to hear one Nottingham-based charity has said childhood obesity is not being tackled due to a lack of funding in primary care.

Tam Fry, National Obesity Forum board member and chair for the Child Growth Foundation, said many healthcare professionals are overworked and too busy with other duties.

"They are not able to do the necessary things to make sure that early signs of obesity are picked up and interventions are offered," he added.

Mr Fry urged the government to give parents the information and support they need to "do a good job with their children".

His comments follow news NHS staff do not view primary care as an effective way to target childhood obesity.

Health practitioners surveyed by the British Journal of General Practice cited reasons including a lack of expertise and resources.
