South-west girls told 'positive outlook better than looks'

According to This is Bristol, students at Colston's Girls' School were addressed by an expert in facial disfigurement who stressed that they should not be too focused on their looks.

Professor Nichola Rumsey, director of the Centre of Appearance Research at the University of the West of England, was the speaker at the Bristol school's annual prize giving service.

Speaking about how images generated by advertising and the media place pressure on young people, she highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and good communication skills.

Principal Lesley Ann Jones told the news source: "Professor Rumsey was inspirational. Her message was appropriate to us all, parents, staff and the girls."

Previously fee-charging, Colston's Girl's School has been a state-funded academy since 2008.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Paul Harrod has called for a further private school - Bristol Grammar School - to become an academy, claims the Bristol Evening Post.
