According to the Birmingham Post, the council is searching for Midlands construction firms to join developer Catalyst Lend Lease to deliver the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The BSF scheme is the largest of its kind in the UK and will see more than 80 schools renovated over the next 15 years.

On a national level, the government-backed initiative aims to rebuild or renew nearly every school in the country.

The council needs support from firms specialising in cooling products, lighting, acoustics, classroom equipment, doors and windows and storage and sports equipment, claims the Post.

Les Lawrence, council cabinet member for children, young people and families, told the newspaper: "This is a tremendous opportunity for local firms, particularly in the current economic climate.

"We are undergoing the biggest school transformation programme in decades at the end of which will we have modern education centres across the city."
