A new category has been created for the 2010 Teaching Awards called the Henry Winkler Teaching Award for Special Needs.

The Happy Days actor selected the awards as his favourite charity for an Absolute Radio competition where he beat other celebrities to win £40,000 for this chosen cause.

Winkler is said to be a passionate campaigner for special needs issues after his own experience struggling with dyslexia. His three children are also affected by the disorder.

He told education magazine SecEd: "My thoughts are not just lip service, but rather a point of view that comes from the experience of being in their classrooms, talking to their students, and watching my own children thrive because someone cared to make their differences a priority, as opposed to treating them as a nuisance."

Next year will also see two further categories make their debut: the Award for Outstanding School Team of the Year and the Film My School competition.
