Islington residents have had mixed reactions to the council decision to offer free school meals to all pupils in six primary schools.

According to the Islington Gazette, local Labour councillors believe the scheme should have been rolled out across the borough, but this has met with resistance from council leader Terry Stacy.

Mr Stacy told the paper he was concerned the "back-of-a-fag packet" scheme would cost £7 million and take resources away from other areas.

"We should provide free school meals for those who need it most with the rest of the money for those who are struggling during these hard times," he added.

The news follows a government announcement last week that all schools in Newham, in east London and County Durham are to offer their pupils free lunches.

The pilot aims to establish whether providing children with a nutritious lunch helps to improve behaviour and concentration.
