Young people 'should know what's on offer'

A lack of communication is preventing young people from taking part in organised activities, says new research.

The report from the Department for Children Schools and Families suggests that most young people see activities as a positive thing but are prevented from taking part because they do not know what is on offer.

Those with jobs in education may be interested to hear that children's minister Dawn Primarolo is calling upon local authorities to help improve awareness about what activities and places are available for young people.

"We know that word of mouth is so important in getting the message out so it's vital that youth centre opening times and free activities are advertised to young people, parents, teachers, and the community," she added.

According to the research, many young people also felt that organised activities were largely reserved for particularly athletic or talented children.

Last week saw the opening of a new advice and support centre for young people in east London.

The Barking and Dagenham Foyer is available for those aged 16 to 25 and offers information on issues including careers, housing and life skills.
