Pets unit for special needs school

A Derbyshire special needs school is reported to be planning a new facility for pets.

According to the Derby Telegraph, the £29,000 facility at Brackenfield School and Specialist College of Cognition and Learning in Long Eaton will house rabbits and guinea pigs.

The paper reports that Derbyshire County Council is backing the new unit as it will offer "therapeutic benefits" for the school's pupils with learning difficulties.

Studying the animals and how to care for them could also be part of the 14 to 18-year-olds' curriculum, it added.

The school's work on personal development and well-being was recently rated as "outstanding" in an Ofsted inspection.

Earlier this week saw schools secretary Ed Balls announce a new range of measures affecting children with special needs and their families.

Mr Balls said that Ofsted inspections are to focus more closely on what level of support schools provide for those with special needs.

In addition parents are to have a new right of appeal over how their child's needs are assessed.
