Supercollege 'could be built in Wales'

The governing bodies of two of South Wales' largest sixth-form colleges are considering a merger, reports suggest.

Cardiff's Coleg Glan Hafren and Barry College have proposed joining together to form a larger regional site, reports the South Wales Echo.

According to a statement released to the paper by the two colleges, implications for those in the area with jobs in education are "yet to be determined".

The statement said: "The colleges are committed to consulting with staff and updating them of developments at every stage of the process."

Over 21,000 students across eight sites are currently served by the colleges, reports the Echo.

Details of the plan are not yet said to be finalised but a decision is expected later this year.

If the plans are accepted by the Welsh Assembly, a merger could take place in September 2010.

Meanwhile, councillors in Reading blame a lack of government funding for their decision to scrap a £60 million plan to merge three local schools.

Council member for children and young people Barbara Alexander said the amount of financial aid offered was "inadequate".
