Sats results 'welcomed' by DCSF

National results for primary school Sats exams were released today by the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF).

The results showed a one per cent decline in the number of 11-year olds reaching a level four grade in English and Maths, compared to last year.

This year saw 72 per cent of pupils achieve a level four or above in both English and maths while in 2008 one per cent more reached the same level.

Schools minister Diana Johnson praised primary school staff and pointed to a four per cent increase in the number of pupils achieving a level five grade.

However, she said the government would have to ask some "hard questions" in order to make progress in next year's exams.

"It is therefore encouraging to see improvements in areas already using schemes such as the Improving School programme, where they can track pupils’ progress and make sure they get what they need to succeed," she added.

The results' announcement follows warnings from teaching union the National Association of Head Teachers, reported in the Times, that over 100 primary schools have requested that their tests be re-marked.
