Improving the lives of young people through partnerships with the voluntary sector is the aim of a new government initiative.

Children's minister Delyth Morgan has outlined how the government, local authorities and charities can improve communication and share expertise, those with jobs in education may be interested to hear.

Launching the new initiative, Ms Morgan said: "We want the third sector to continue to play a vital role in policy development and to be actively involved in the planning, design and delivery of local services."

The third sector strategy plan is expected to improve commissioning by improving awareness of what the third sector can provide and reduce bureaucracy by ensuring information can be used by all stakeholders.

Building on a plan originally produced by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007, the initiative was launched at the opening of a new facility for young people in east London.

The Barking and Dagenham Foyer offers information and advice on life-skills and employment for young people aged 16 or above.
