Essex teens sample life as teaching assistants

According to local paper the Echo, the youngsters took part in a five-day course run by music college Point Blank and backed by the local council.

David Garnish, who led the workshop, told the newspaper: "It's an excellent way for them to learn how to teach.

"Everyone has to give a lesson on how to do something, from changing a nappy to setting up a sound system."

Two students who completed the course will now be put forward to work with Point Blank as teaching assistants in local community projects, he added.

All those who took part are said to have gained an Open College Network qualification.

Point Blank's Basildon branch opened in February this year, claims the Echo.

Speaking at the launch of the college, Kelvin Blake, Basildon’s councillor responsible for leisure, told the paper: "This gives young people a great chance to learn new skills which they can apply in a hobby or a future career."
