A-level achievers revealed

Girls, private-school attendees and those in the south of the country performed best in their A-levels this year, new analysis shows.

According to the Guardian, more than half of the exams taken by pupils at private school resulted in an A grade, compared to around 20 per cent in state-run schools.

Close to 80 per cent of pupils at private schools got either an A or a B grade in their exams, compared to 45 per cent at comprehensive schools, sixth form colleges and further education colleges.

Girls once again outperformed boys in the results tables. However, the gap between the sexes is narrowing - with the difference between the two being at its lowest level since 1995, according to the Telegraph.

Despite the dominance of the south, improvements were made in the results of people in the north-east, chief executive of the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance Mike Cresswell said.
