Plaistow in London is celebrating success at this year's Teaching Awards as two teachers from the area won a Plato trophy, which is the teaching industry's version of the entertainment world's Oscars.

A special needs teacher and a headteacher from different schools in Plaistow were among the winners at the London final, reports the Newham Recorder.

Kevin Higgins of Eleanor Smith School won the special needs teacher of the year award, while Tom Canning from Tollgate School was crowned headteacher of the year.

The pair will now go forward to the national finals of the awards and could win a national prize for their efforts, competing against regional winners from around the country.

Commenting on the event, executive of the Teaching Awards, Caroline Evans, told the newspaper: "I am delighted to congratulate all our award winners who deserve every bit of praise and applause."

The Teaching Awards programme aims to highlight excellence and to encourage best practice in teaching, the organisation's website explains.
