Special needs and secondary school staff in Runcorn are to see the benefits of a £200 million investment in the local area.

The Cheshire town will see the Halton High School re-open next autumn as an academy co-sponsored by the University of Chester and The Ormiston Trust, reports the Runcorn & Widnes World.

Halton borough council's director of education Gerald Meehan told the paper: "It will increase aspiration with a charitable organisation which has pupils’ welfare at heart and the academic rigour of a university."

A new all-in-one school will accommodate 750 children from the local area's current nursery, infant, junior and secondary schools.

Meanwhile the Ashley special needs school will move into a new building adjoining the current site.

Funding was approved by schools' secretary Ed Balls as part of Runcorn's Building Schools for the Future programme.

The Teachernet website describes the national programme as "the biggest-ever school buildings investment programme".

It aims to rebuild or refurbish every secondary school in England.
