Ministers blamed for Sats delays

Those in school staff jobs were unable to issue Sats results on time last year due to government interference, say MPs.

A select committee report into why 11 and 14-year olds across the country were left waiting for exam results last year found that the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) had been too involved in the marking process.

The report said that the department had placed "undue constraints on the executive decision-making abilities of its agency, Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)".

It recommended that agencies, including the QCA, should "stand-up" to the government when it considers that their requests are "unreasonable or incapable of performance".

The inquiry into why the Sats test results were not delivered in time was launched in July last year.

Former Ofsted chief Lord Sutherland headed the committee after questions were asked in the House of Commons about what had led to the delay.
