Newcastle schools to get more free-range meals

Newcastle city council has reviewed its food policy and will announce new measures to increase free-range foods in schools, reports the Journal.

The council will announce its Animal Cruelty Free Food Policy after it meets tomorrow. According to the Journal free-range eggs, ethically-sourced meat and local vegetables will soon be finding their way to kids' plates.

As part of its review, the council looked at all its food contracts and based its assessment on the Farm and Animal Welfare Council's Five Freedoms Standard.

Once in place, the new dietary guidance will benefit council workers as well as children and people in county hospitals.

The Department of Health hopes its five-a-day programme will help children take on the correct amount of vitamins and minerals by encouraging them to eat sufficient portions of fruit and vegetables.
