Uniform 'will last or money back'

Teachers may soon see their pupils in cut-price attire as a school uniform that costs less than £5 will last for 100 days or parents will be refunded in full, says Asda.

The £4.50 uniform from the company's George range includes items protected with Teflon and a 100 per cent cotton polo-shirt.

The supermarket says that if customers complain of any stains or rips by the end of the autumn term they can expect a full refund or exchange.

The managing director of Asda's clothing line Anthony Thompson said: "Over the last two years there has been a gradual acceptance - not at George - of disposable fashion.

"To contemplate that on children's wear is a disgrace. It should be made to last," he added.

Helen Brown of parental advice site Mumsnet said that although parents worry about the ethical issues involved in making cheap clothes, price will always be an important factor.

Last month saw rival supermarket Tesco launch a £3.75 uniform.
Tesco's clothing chief executive Terry Green said that they were launching the offer early so parents would not have to worry over the summer about whether they could afford school uniforms.
