Talking is 'essential part of learning'

How teachers use language in the classroom has a significant impact on children's development, according to education experts in Bristol.

Researchers at the University of the West of England agreed with key elements of Sir Jim Rose's recent primary review issued by the Department for Children Schools and Families.

The review stresses the importance of how speech is used with children of primary school-age.

Dr Richard Eke and John Lee's recent publication Using Talk Effectively in the Classroom says that teachers should be free to initiate spontaneous conversation with pupils.

The book's authors say that in the past, teachers have been inhibited by the curriculum which prevented them from "seizing the moment".

"A child who is enabled to communicate effectively is a child who has the key tool to succeed in all areas across the curriculum. But this is a tool to be nurtured and encouraged," said Dr Eke.

Sir Jim Rose's review was published in December last year. Its recommendations included a greater emphasis on teaching children life and social skills.
