Special needs school up for IT award

A Plymouth school for children with physical difficulties and special needs has been shortlisted for a national award.

The ICT Excellence awards rewards schools who demonstrate an innovative use of information and communication technologies.

Woodlands School is one of only four representatives from the south-west region which has n nominated for the award, reports the Plymouth Herald.

Headteacher Andrea Hemmens told the paper: "We were encouraged by our assessor to enter the ICT Excellence Awards as she was very impressed with the range and quality of provision for children with tremendous difficulties in accessing computers."

Last year saw Woodlands receive the accolade of becoming the first special needs school to be given the ICT Mark, said the Herald.

The mark is awarded by the government’s technology agency for schools Becta.

Woodlands School supports mainstream teachers by providing assessments of pupils’ needs and lending special equipment.

The winners of the ICT Excellence awards will be announced on July 22nd.
