Schools celebrate shining talent

More than five thousand schools across the UK have been showcasing the skills of their pupils this week in a nationwide celebration of young people.

Shine Week was created last year by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to recognise the positive achievements of young people beyond academic work.

More than twice the number of schools and youth groups have signed up to be involved this year, those with jobs in education may be interested to read.

Activities will include a debate in the House of Lords and a dance performance on the roof of London's the Southbank Centre.

Children and young people’s minister Dawn Primarolo said that many young people felt they had been unfairly 'demonised' by the media.

"The vast majority of families are justifiably proud of their young people and their achievements, and we as a society should be proud of them too," she said.

As part of the week-long celebrations pupils at Mellow Lane School in Middlesex won the prize of a tennis coaching session from former British number one Tim Henman.
