Four sixth forms in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales are to be united into one college, causing objections from pupils and staff, The South Wales Echo has reported.

Cyfarthfa High School, Pen Y Dre High School, Afon Taf High School and Bishop Hedley RC High School will all merge in 2013 under plans agreed by the local council.

A new single-site college will replace the current individual school sixth forms and according to local councillors, the move will help improve academic standards.

Council cabinet minister Richard Thomas said the move was devised to help improve academic results within the borough, which are "well below the Welsh average".

Head of sixth form at Bishop Hedley, Bill Mulry, told the paper he believes there "are other elements we can offer a sixth-former that a college can't."

The UK has several types of school in which teaching assistants can work, these include community schools, foundation and trust schools, voluntary-aided and voluntary-controlled schools.
