The head teacher of a Basingstoke secondary school has been awarded Head Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.

Julie Rose of Everest Community College was praised at the Teaching Awards 2009 for her hard work, drive and determination.

Miss Rose, 50, told the Gazette: "It was a team effort that enabled me to win this award."

"Everest has come an awful long way in a very short period of time and it's nice to have that acknowledged and it will inspire us to have more success," she added.

Her award was one of 12 handed out, which were sponsored by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Students Chris Page, Amy Cotton, Ross Macgourlay, Spardha Kunar and Ms Page's personal assistant Caroline Hams all attended the ceremony, as did student support worker Caroline Hams.

In recognition of her efforts, Ms Rose will now go through to the national final and enjoy a flight in an RAF aircraft.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19208682-ADNFCR
