Children enjoy their first parliament

Despite being too young to vote, children from 46 schools have held their own parliament at a special event organised by Bath Spa University.

Pupils from Bath and north-east Somerset primary, infants and junior schools took part in a day of debate and learned to better understand the democratic process.

Their ideas were heard by visiting dignitaries including officers and councillors from local authorities and the director of children's services Ashley Ayre.

"We hope to use their ideas to shape the work we do, both in schools and the wider community," said councillor Chris Watt, the council's cabinet member for children and young people.

Children enjoyed a picnic in the Newton Park grounds before settling down to an afternoon of debate and voting.

Teaching assistants hoping to motivate their pupils to get involved in learning politics could refer them to the Children's United Parliament of the World.

The organisation - now based in Helsinki - promotes democracy, peace, prosperity and better life for the children of the world.
