Sats replacement to undergo further trials

The examination system devised to replace the controversial Standard Assessment Tests (Sats) will need continued trials, the government has said.

The Guardian has claimed leaked reports suggested problems with the new Single Level Test system, although the government insists the examinations are still being evaluated.

By adopting this new approach, teachers would have additional flexibility and could test a student when they think they are ready.

According to a government spokesperson, by piloting the tests it has the opportunity "to constantly review and evaluate so that we can iron out any problems".

Teaching assistants and teachers have previously complained that the Sats system requires too much time teaching children to just pass the tests.

The Conservative Party has proposed a separate approach. It says tests usually taken at the end of primary education should instead be deffered to the first term of secondary school.
