Young people invited to government's open weekend

The government's Open Weekend events hope to attract young people with activities such as playing in a band or making a pizza.

On June 10th and June 11th local authorities will encourage youngsters to take part in the initiative, in response to claims the young people have little to do outside school hours.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families hopes the event will help to raise awareness of the choices children have and keep them from anti-social behaviour.

"We want to see places that young people actually want to go to, where they can take part in a range of fun and interesting activities," said Dawn Primarolo, minister for children and young people.

According to the department, where established activities are running, anti-social behaviour has fallen by up to 50 per cent.

Teaching assistants can get involved helping with after school events, which are run by most primary and secondary schools.
