Families' minister will step down

The minister for families, Beverly Hughes, will step down at the next election, it has been reported.

Ms Hughes has been responsible for a number of initiatives that were developed to help provide children with early education facilities.

Most notable has been her involvement with the government's Sure Start children's centres.

Alison Garnham, joint chief executive of charity the Daycare Trust, told the Guardian that the minister "has been a tireless champion of high quality early childhood education and care, and she will be missed by those of us working in the sector".

The Sure Start initiative is one of the Labour Party's flagship policies and was devised to develop 3,000 children's centres in some of the UK's poorest areas.

Teaching assistants are likely to work with some children that have been through the centres and can also specialise in special needs teaching should they choose to.
