The Rawlins Community College in Quorn, Leicestershire, has adopted strict rules to help its pupils stay off smoking.

Pupils caught smoking have to attend advice sessions devised to help them quit, thisisLeicestershire.co.uk has reported.

The ruling applies both inside the college and around its grounds. Teaching assistants and teachers who see children lighting up near the school will apply the ruling to all students - even those old enough to smoke.

Principal Callum Orr said: "The smoking cessation sessions are intended as a sanction because it will take pupils' time from them, but the main aim is to help people stop smoking."

Despite numerous government initiatives, stopping children from smoking remains a challenge for teaching assistants and fully qualified teachers.

According to the US pressure group Action on Smoking, stricter rules outlawing the sale of cigarettes to children would effectively cut the number of teen smokers.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19198214-ADNFCR
