Most Leicestershire schools will get 20mph zones

In Leicestershire, most county schools will benefit from the introduction of new 20mph zones, the Leicester Mercury reports.

Council leaders have agreed to support the initiative in the hope it will make life safer for children attending county schools.

Mary Lawson, headteacher at All Saints' Primary in Long Street, Wigston, said traffic has slowed since the zones were introduced.

She told the paper: "We contacted the county council to have a 20mph zone installed and the change has been very noticeable."

In counties across the UK, councils have been enforcing 20mph zones.

Councillor Ray Parsons of Devizes council has asked for the initiative to be more widely adopted.

"Children are very vulnerable creatures and we have to look after their welfare. So we need to look at speed limits all over town," he said.

Teachers and teaching assistants are often supported by a school crossing patroller who helps children cross roads near schools.
