Immediate action needed to help children reach GCSE targets, says Balls

Ed Balls, secretary of state for children, schools and education, has said councils need to plan decisively to help children pass their GCSE exams.

The minister asked councils for their renewed commitment to help at least 30 per cent of pupils achieve five GCSEs or more.

"Despite my continuing optimism over the forthcoming GCSE results, I believe that we will need to see further, renewed commitment to structural solutions from local authorities in the autumn," the minister commented.

Under the government's new National Challenge initiative, teachers and teaching assistants work together to raise standards.

Mr Balls has also told local authorities to "not rule out any options in the search to deliver better pupils' outcomes".

Some schools are using CD-ROMs to help their pupils learn foreign languages. A study by researchers at Durham University found children using the disks learnt French faster than those who used books, reported the Independent ADNFCR-2164-ID-19223108-ADNFCR
