The east of England has awarded its special needs Teacher of the Year award to Deborah James from Holme Court School in Biggleswade, bedfordtoday.co.uk has reported.

Ms James works with dyslexic children and was presented her award by BBC personality Susie Fowler-Watt.

Before qualifying as a special needs teacher Ms James worked as a teaching assistant and before that she was a youth worker and spent time as a mortgage advisor.

The competition judges noted: "She says she 'lives to teach' and she does indeed radiate her love of teaching, which is infectious to all."

Having introduced individual targets for each child to attain and consulted with their parents, Ms James was able to study for a Specific Learning Difficulties Diploma and learn more about certain conditions, the site noted.

People new to special needs teaching should not expect instant results and should look to their special needs co-coordinator for help, a recent feature in the Times Educational Supplement advised.
