According to the Global Language Monitor, the English language now has one million words.

The tally was achieved after a website that monitors English usage calculated all the words currently in use.

The group's president and chief word analyst Paul JJ Payack said: "The million word milestone brings to notice the coming of age of English as the first truly global language".

However, teaching assistants who choose to pass on the news may do so with some caution, as the group includes hybrid versions of English and slang.

The millionth word or phrase recorded was Web 2.0. The count now stands at one million and one as the monitor has added 'Financial Tsunami' to its listings.

"At its current rate, English generates about 14.7 words a day or one every 98 minutes," the monitor claims.
