Wales' best teachers have been celebrated at the 11th annual Welsh Teaching Awards ceremony at Cardiff City Hall.

The event recognised the efforts of teaching assistants, teachers, schools, governors and headteachers, Walesonline.co.uk has reported.

The Special Needs Teacher of the Year Award went to Kath Davies, of Ysgol Penmaes, in Brecon.

Miss Davies took the opportunity to thank her colleagues and pupils: "I'm so thankful for the path that I'm on because I am still on it and I've still got lots to learn," she commented.

The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to the headteacher of Ysgol Cynfran Llysfaen, in Llysfaen, Colwyn Bay, Geraint Williams.

Soon to retire, Mr Williams says it will not be easy to stop after 38 years in the job.

Walesonline.co.uk noted he said: "What I've tried to achieve all through my career is to allow children to achieve the best that they can."

Teachers and their teaching assistants come from a variety of backgrounds, many having taken advantage of the large bursaries the government offers to professionals to change careers.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19216918-ADNFCR
