Across North Tyneside 14 schools have been awarded the coveted Artsmark Gold standard for their teaching of arts subjects, the News Guardian reports.

The result brings to 30 the number of schools in the borough that have achieved the standard, which is awarded by Arts Council England.

Schools can apply for accreditation at three levels: Artsmark, Artsmark Silver or Artsmark Gold.

"This is an excellent achievement and demonstrates North Tyneside's commitment to encouraging and developing the arts across all of our schools," commented Gill Alexander, strategic director for children, young people and learning.

Teachers and teaching assistants in North Yorkshire have also proved the county's ongoing commitment to the arts - Arts Council England recently awarded it a record 197 awards.

Andy Carver, executive director, Yorkshire, explained: "Artsmark sets the standard for an outstanding arts offer in schools and it's great to see so many new schools attaining the Artsmark award this year.

"The award recognises a school's passion for the arts and its belief in the power of creativity," he added.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19214095-ADNFCR
