Computer games console maker Nintendo hopes to be able to advise on the creation of electronic versions of popular schoolyard games.
In collaboration with three universities and the British Library, the company will lend its expertise to the creation of games similar to those played on its popular Wii console.
Project leader Andrew Burn says the team hopes to record movements seen during playtime and incorporate them into computer games.
"Gaming platforms such as the Wii are designed for physical play and are therefore ideal for producing games involving movement. They also appeal to a wide audience of casual gamers, with an emphasis on family-friendly content," Mr Burn added.
One primary school in King's Cross and another in Sheffield will help researchers with their work so academics can further understand how playground games are evolving.
Teaching assistants are well aware how important it is for children to remain active, while ensuring they are safe when playing.
Guidance on playgrounds is provided by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, which tasks its officers to inspect play areas.
