Brixham College raises £500 for disabled locals

Students at Brixham College have raised £500 for disabled people living nearby in Douglas House, thisissouthdevon.co.uk has reported.

The schoolchildren used non-uniform days, a sponsored walk, cake sales, a raffle and ran a lunch time cafe at their school to collect the cash.

Douglas House is situated across the road from the school making it easy for the pupils, from the College's Inspire House, to keep in touch.

Kay Taylor, service manager at Douglas House, said he gave a talk to the children with one of the disabled residents and since then "Inspire adopted us as their charity and have worked hard to raise funds for us".

Tutor John Ridge explained that the school would like some of the pupils to visit Douglas House on work experience, where they could "experience the difficulties some people face in their lives and how well they overcome them".

Teaching assistants develop unique skills from working with their classes and can even supervise out-of-school activities.

According to the national job profiles, level two teaching assistants are expected to "accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required".
