The government has revealed that the number of teachers and teaching assistants in English schools has risen over the last 12 months.

New figures from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) show that the school workforce has increased by 18,500 to a total of 786,200 in the last year.

There are now 441,300 teachers in total and 183,200 teaching assistants, an increase of 122,600 since 1997.

Applications for teacher training positions are also up by 22.7 per cent compared to last year.

Schools minister Jim Knight said: "There are now fewer schools vacancies overall than this time last year and we are targeting high calibre candidates from industries which have been affected by the financial downturn such, as city workers to join the workforce next year."

He added that incentives such as golden hellos and training bursaries were helping fill teaching jobs in problematic subjects such as science.
