The National Union of Teachers (NUT) as elected Christine Blower as its new general secretary, after no one stood against her for the post.

Ms Blower, who had previously been deputy general secretary of the union, already held the position of acting general secretary before her election.

After winning the post on a permanent basis, she said: "There is much to do on all the campaigns we have set out for the union.

"I will work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcomes for members, children and the education service."

Along with her position at the union, Ms Blower has held teaching jobs at a variety of secondary schools.

In 1990 she left front line teaching to begin work with children at risk of care or custody and those who had behavioural problems until she was elected deputy general secretary with the NUT.

The national conference of the NUT was held in Cardiff last month.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19155501-ADNFCR
