Children plant, grow and sell their own greens

Children at Shipbourne Primary School have planted, grown and have now sold fresh produce from a market stall, reports thisiskent.co.uk.

The initiative was devised to fulfil an Ofsted teaching requirement that all teaching assistants need to be familiar with.

The kids from year six and a teaching assistant took runner beans, sweet corn, tomatoes and other produce and practiced selling it at a local farmers' market.

Money raised from a recent bonfire night collection went towards the price of the school's new greenhouse and selling the produce was a way to illustrate this to the community, head teacher Cathy Farthing told the website.

"Children had a budget to spend and had to work out how much money was made or lost taking into account the cost of the seeds," she explained.

Fruit and vegetables are also an important part of children's diets. According to Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming, kids should take on at least five portions throughout each day.
