A teaching assistant who works with special needs children has been recognised by a nomination for the Teaching Awards.

Barbara Bowers will learn if she has won the teaching assistant of the year award for the south west region at a glamorous ceremony at Dartington Hall near Totnes next month, reports the Herald Express.

Ms Bowers, who has been in her job with Dartmouth Community College for 18 years, was nominated by her peers at the school.

She told the newspaper: "It's marvellous to think that your colleagues hold you in such a high regard.

"I wasn't expecting this at all. It's fantastic. It's also the first time anyone from our school has ever been nominated for such an award."

Hollywood actor and author Henry Winkler is a patron of the teaching awards.

He recently won a competition organised by the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show featuring other celebrities and funded a new award promoting special needs teaching with the prize money.ADNFCR-2164-ID-19185562-ADNFCR
