Parents of special needs kids warned to consider schools

The mother of a child with special needs in Plymouth has warned parents not to automatically send their kids to specialist schools.

Rhonda Timmins decided to send daughter Taylor-Paige, who has Asperger's Syndrome, to the mainstream Notre Dame Roman Catholic High School for Girls, reports the Herald.

When Taylor-Paige left primary school a couple of years ago, her options seemed to be attending a special needs school or being educated at home.

But Ms Timmins thought hard about what to do before electing to put her daughter in a regular school.

And she told the newspaper the move proved the right one: "She has fantastic help from teachers, teaching assistants and other pupils and her progress in education has been nothing short of overwhelming."

She added other parents should do the same if they feel a mainstream school is the right option for their child.

Notre Dame has been an educational facility in one form or other since 1855.
