Lancaster grammar schools target less privileged students

A grammar school in Lancaster is aiming to attract more pupils from less privileged backgrounds, it has been reported.

In news that may interest teachers and teaching assistants, Lancaster Royal Grammar School (LRGS) collaborate with Lancaster Girls' Grammar School in establishing an Inspirus Masterclass programme, the Lancaster Guardian reports.

The scheme will be headed by specialist teacher who will work with local primary schools to raise the aspirations of promising pupils and encourage extra-curricular learning.

LRGS headmaster Andrew Jarman told the newspaper: "Any bright child from any street in the Lancaster area should have the opportunity to come here or to Lancaster Girls' Grammar School.

"We want to remove any social barriers that might exist."

The initiative was announced at the launch of LRGS's Plan for Renewal on Friday (May 15th), which hopes to speed up the development of the 150-year old school.

In other news that may interest special needs co-ordinators, a meeting of Gloucestershire Schools Forum recently allocated funding to projects aimed at improving approaches to special needs teaching and adapting the curriculum.
