Growing Schools programme praised by special needs teacher

A special needs teacher at a junior school in Chester has backed a new initiative aimed at encouraging pupils to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The Let's Grow initiative, part of a wider government scheme entitled Growing Schools, is supported by supermarket Morrisons, which has so far given out 40 million vouchers for gardening equipment in schools, the Chester Evening Leader reports.

Nicki Poulton, special needs co-ordinator (SENCO) at St Thomas of Canterbury Junior School told the publication: "We're over the moon to get so much gardening equipment and the children can't wait to get stuck in and put it to good use."

The news may be of interest to other SENCOs or those searching for primary teaching jobs, and has also gained support from local MP Christine Russell, who labelled it "really important for children's development".

Supported by the Department of Children, Schools and Families, the Growing Schools scheme hopes to support teachers and teaching assistants in using "the outdoor classroom" as an important curriculum resource, its website states.
