Demonstrations can help special needs students

A leading educational figure has stressed the importance of using demonstrations when teaching special needs pupils, particularly in the field of science.

Lynn Greenwold, chief executive of Patoss - the professional association of teachers of students with specific learning difficulties, made the comments in the Times.

She explained that special needs pupils benefitted from seeing demonstrations as they were easier to understand than simply listening or reading information.

"And there are plenty of opportunities for demonstrations in science," she said.

"The more you show pupils what you're talking about, the better. It's so much more fun anyway."

Ms Greenwold also highlighted the fact dyslexic pupils could struggle with science lessons because of the number of terms used which use complex spelling.

She advises special sessions on vocabulary to help combat this problem.
