Primary school staff to be affected by curriculum changes

Primary school staff are due to be affected by forthcoming changes to the curriculum, which were announced by the government today.

Schools secretary Ed Balls unveiled the details of the review of the primary curriculum, which was conducted by education expert Sir Jim Rose.

A central focus of the report is on ICT skills among children, which Sir Jim has said should be prioritised alongside numeracy and literacy in pupils.

In order to ensure that those in primary teaching jobs are up-to-date with the latest developments in computers and the internet, they will be provided with extra training, it was noted.

Meanwhile, a raft of other recommendations were made, including the division of the primary curriculum into six new areas of learning.

"Sir Jim's review will give primary heads and teachers more freedom to decide what to teach and how, so children enjoy learning and make good progress," stated Mr Balls.

The new PSHE curriculum, which is due to become compulsory in both primary and secondary schools from 2011, was unveiled by the government earlier this week.
