Calls made for teacher co-operation with Welsh school building scheme

The Welsh Assembly Government should ensure that it consults those in teaching jobs when implementing plans to revamp schools, it has been argued.

It was announced this month that £109 million is to be invested in bringing educational institutions in the country up to 21st-century standards.

With the funds, 40 schools and colleges in Wales will either be constructed or refurbished.

And while welcoming the news of the investment in the buildings, the Teacher Support Network (TSN) has cautioned that it is important that school staff are consulted in the design process.

"With the right levels of teacher and architectural involvement in the process, the money represents a significant contribution to the development of schools that can teach children well into the 21st century," the organisation has stated.

It has called for every procurement process to have a named individual responsible for ensuring that teachers are fully engaged throughout.

Calls for teachers to have more input into England's Building Schools for the Future programme were made jointly by the TSN and the British Council for School Environments last September.
